“The people you spend time with shape the person you are today and the person you aspire to be tomorrow”- Reid Hoffman Founder of Linkedin
LESSON/PRINCIPLE
Who are your friends, and who are your clients? A common wisdom is this: “Your income is the average of the five closest people you hang out with.” This applies perfectly to your career as a real estate agent.
Think about it. Let’s assume you live in a $300,000 neighborhood. Who are you doing business with— clients selling $80,000 homes or $5,000,000 homes? Probably not. If you live in a $300,000 neighborhood, you probably sell properties within 10% of $300,000.
This rule applies to nearly everything.
If you hang out with people who drink, chances are you’re a drinker or you’ll start drinking.
If you spend time with people who like to exercise, chances are you exercise or will start pretty soon.
If you spend time with people who waste money or are cheap, you’ll begin to emulate them.
Don’t expect to lose weight if you hang around overweight people, or to save money if you hang out with financially irresponsible people, or to invest properly if you’re surrounded by poor investors or people who don’t invest at all.
The same rule applies to your career. If you want to improve, you need to hang out with people who have improved themselves and are in a better place than you are right now.
APPLICATION
If you’re just getting started in this industry, make sure to surround yourself with agents who are already successful. Become their assistant, helper or buyer’s agent for a while. Learn the business from watching what they do. You’re paying with your time the tuition for your education in the industry. Avoid the mistake that most people make when they start. Don’t hang around with other newbie real estate agents creating a cycle of negativity and skepticism. Newbies don’t know what to do so they usually blame their brokers, the market or their clients. “You can’t soar like an eagle when you hang out with turkeys”.
Who are you hanging around with? Do you have a mentor? Do you have a coach?
In the following video I explain how to find influential friends and mentors like Kamau Bobb of Google who will help you develop your business.
